Traditional Rumford Fireplace & Brick Chimney

This project shows the construction of a traditional Rumford fireplace and new brick chimney from the foundation upward.

The progression includes the footing, fireplace base, Rumford firebox and smoke chamber, exterior chimney construction and the finished fireplace and chimney.

Project Progression

This project began with an existing antique brick chimney and stove. After removing the stove and opening the chimney, a traditional Rumford fireplace was built into the existing masonry. The photos show the retrofit from the original condition through the completed fireplace.

Traditional Rumford construction: Rumford fireplaces use a tall, shallow firebox and carefully formed throat and smoke chamber to improve radiant heat and draft. The new Rumford fireplace was carefully built into the existing antique brick chimney.
